The decision to extend retirement age from 60 to 65 years has been widely praised, especially by those who still have the ability and desire to work. However, it should be up to the individual to decide whether or not to continue working, and it should not be mandatory for everyone.
There are many factors to consider, such as the nature of the job, health, finances and personal priorities. For example, those who have worked in physically demanding jobs may need a break to focus on their health.
On the other hand. those who have excelled in professions such as research and education may have much more to offer and should be given the option to continue working beyond the age of 60.
It is important to recognise that intellectuals benefit from lifelong learning and critical thinking, which can promote good health.
We need a sustainable system that allows talented individuals to continue contributing to their profession beyond the age of 60. Ultimately, it should be the individual's choice whether to retire at 60 or later.
